Analysis of Patient Preference for Cryotherapy Techniques
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
- The authors surveyed 58 patients over 1 year who had received cryotherapy through both a cryogen spray technique and cotton-tipped applicator technique during past clinic visits. Mean pain scores were lower with the cotton-tipped applicator method (2.48 vs 2.95; P=.0128). Patients also perceived the cotton-tipped applicator method as being more precise on a 5-point scale. Of the 42 patients who indicated a preference, 34 favored the cotton-tipped applicator over the spray technique.
- Although the study design is limited by recall bias, patients perceived cryotherapy with a cotton-tip applicator as being less painful and more precise than that with a spray technique. While prior studies have shown both methods to be equally effective, these results remind dermatologists to consider patient preference when choosing a technique.
– Margaret Hammond, MD
Cryotherapy is a readily used technique that is effective for the treatment of a variety of conditions, from viral warts to superficial nonmelanoma skin cancers. Strengths of the technique include its convenience, ease of administration, and its ability to produce cosmetically pleasing results with little risk of complications.
