TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

• In this prospective observational study, 11 patients with notalgia paresthetica underwent once-weekly treatments with 308-nm excimer lamp at a standardized dose of 300 mJ/cm2 for all patients. At baseline, mean pruritus score based on a visual analog scale was 8.18, which decreased to 3.09 after treatment (P = .03). A median of four sessions were required to reach pruritus remission. Of the total, 9 patients achieved complete remission and did not have any recurrence of symptoms in the 6-months follow-up period.

• Although further studies with a control group are needed, this study suggests that 308-nm excimer lamp treatment weekly for even just four sessions may induce remission of notalgia paresthetica.

Abstract

Notalgia paresthetica (NP) is a chronic, neuropathic disorder of unknown aetiology causing pruritus, burning or pain mostly at the interscapular region.1,2 Its prevalence is clearly underestimated, and despite the wide variety of treatment options, its behaviour is chronic and relapsing with low overall efficacy of therapeutic options.2–4 Herein, we report our experience of 308 nm-excimer lamp (308-EL) in the management of NP.
