Buruli Ulcer

Southeastern Australia Reports Increase In Cases Of Buruli Ulcer

The New York Times (3/31, Albeck-Ripka) reports cases of Buruli ulcer "have exploded...in southeastern Australia." The bacteria "has been reported in 33 countries, primarily in Africa, where a lack of access to health care can mean that cases go on for months, sometimes resulting in disfigurement and disability." The recent increase in Australia "has brought new attention to the neglected disease," alongside "a growing global interest in infectious diseases." Some scientists have hypothesized that the bacteria is "transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that have come into contact with" the feces of possums.
