TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
This meta-analysis demonstrated no change in depression scores from baseline in patients receiving isotretinoin vs alternative treatment. The prevalence of depression after isotretinoin treatment declined (RR, 0.588), and the mean depression scores decreased substantially from baseline. However, this decline was not significantly different from that noted with alternative treatment for acne.
The relationship between isotretinoin treatment for acne and depression has been controversial. Data from this study suggest that isotretinoin treatment for acne is not associated with an increased risk for depression and that it may ameliorate depressive symptoms, similar to alternative treatments.
