TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
In an attempt to determine the safety and efficacy of autologous growth factors, study participants with androgenetic alopecia received five injections of plasma rich in growth factors, including TGF-b1, PDGF-AB, VEGF, EGF, TSP, and Ang-1. Injections were given every month for three sessions, and two additional doses were given at months 4 and 7. At 12 months, there was a substantial increase in hair follicles per cm2 and mean shaft cross section (μm). Quantitative phototrichogram showed increased terminal thick hair and decreased terminal thin hair percentages.
This study suggests that injection of autologous growth factors may lead to hair follicle regeneration in people with androgenetic alopecia.
