Prevalence and Risk Factors of Acne Scarring

TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

• This prospective survey-based study assessed risk factors for acne scarring in 1972 patients who consulted a dermatologist. Acne scarring was present in 843 patients (43%). Among these, patients with severe or very severe acne were significantly more likely to have scarring. However, scarring was also present in patients with mild and moderate acne at the time of the study visit (69%). An increase in the likelihood of scarring was correlated with acne severity, time between acne onset and first effective treatment, relapsing acne, and male gender.

• This study found that acne severity was associated with an increased risk of acne scarring, but that patients with mild or moderate acne are also subject to scarring. Clinicians should institute effective acne therapies as soon as possible because a delay in treatment increases the risk of developing scars.
