or Women With Acne, Spironolactone May Be Effective At Reducing Severity With Few Adverse Effects, Researchers Say

Dermatology Advisor (3/25) reports, "For women with acne, treatment with spironolactone was effective in reducing severity and had few adverse effects," researchers concluded after collecting and analyzing data on 395 "women who were patients at the Department of Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic and were prescribed spironolactone to treat acne for at least three months for the period from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2017." The study revealed that "overall, 91.4% of the women experienced acne improvement with spironolactone, with 66.1% achieving complete response." The piece adds, however, that "with increasing evidence of bacterial resistance and the negative effects of oral antibiotics, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends the use of systemic antibiotics for only about three months, wrote the researchers." The findings were published online in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.
