  • Among a cohort of 1372 patients with stage I/II melanoma who were disease-free at 10 years after original diagnosis, metastasis subsequently occurred in 6% (n = 72). The most common sites of metastasis were regional lymph nodes (n = 33), in-transit skin metastases (n = 21), brain (n = 6), and lung (n = 6). Risk factors for late relapse on multivariate analysis were age <40 data-blogger-escaped-1.65="" data-blogger-escaped-breslow="" data-blogger-escaped-thickness="" data-blogger-escaped-years="">2 mm (HR, 2.1), and Clark's level IV/V (HR, 2.1).
  • The authors conclude that physicians should monitor these patients for 10 years, paying special attention to lymph nodes, brain, and lung as common sites for relapse.
