TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
This observational prospective cohort study was conducted to understand the importance of various individual factors and treatment modalities associated with the recurrence of non-genital warts. At 24 weeks, the highest recurrence-free interval rate (74%) was for pulsed dye laser (PDL) treatment, with lower rates for keratolytic treatment (55.1%), cryotherapy (54.0%), and CO2laser (48.0%). Moreover, patients older than 35 years had higher recurrence rates than patients younger than 25, and smokers had a fivefold higher recurrence rate compared with non-smokers.
Based on these data, PDL treatment is associated with the lowest recurrence rates for non-genital warts. Smoking is a particularly important risk factor for recurrence.
