This randomized controlled multicenter trial compared outcomes 12 months after treatment and complications in 142 adults who underwent facial surgery and were randomized to receive simple interrupted sutures (SIS) or running subcuticular sutures (RSS). Both techniques yielded similar cosmetic results at 1 year after surgery based on scores from a single observer. Although the techniques demonstrated comparable postoperative risk, hyper- or hypoesthesia at 12 months was more common in the individuals assigned to RSS compared with those assigned to SIS in both intention-to-treat and per-protocol analysis.
Although SIS and RSS showed similar aesthetic outcomes and complications, SIS may be preferred in facial surgery when appropriate as it yielded less dysesthesia.
