Researchers: Cannabinoids Shouldn't Be Used for Mental Health Disorders
By Amy Orciari Herman
Cannabinoids should not be used to treat mental health disorders, researchers conclude in the Lancet Psychiatry.
The researchers combined data from 40 randomized trials that compared various medicinal cannabis products (e.g., pharmaceutical tetrahydrocannabinol [THC] or cannabidiol) with other treatments or placebo in adults with mental health conditions. Depression and anxiety were most commonly studied, followed by psychosis, Tourette syndrome, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Cannabinoids generally showed little to no benefit in treating any of the conditions studied. There was some evidence that pharmaceutical THC may improve anxiety symptoms in people being treated for other conditions, like chronic pain, but the evidence was of low quality.
The researchers write, "In light of the paucity of evidence and absence of good quality evidence, and the known risk of cannabinoids, the use of cannabinoids as treatments for mental disorders cannot be justified at this time."
Why We Chose This as Our Top Story
William E. Chavey, MD, MS: The changing social and regulatory climate around marijuana has increased the need for scientific evidence on safety and efficacy, and studies like this will be welcome additions to conversations we have with our patients.
André Sofair, MD, MPH: In my state of Connecticut, the inclusion criteria for medical marijuana continue to broaden. It is very important for clinicians to use the evidence base in conversations with their patients to determine who should and should not receive this therapy.
