Effect of Statin Use on Incidence of Eczema and Atopic Dermatitis
TAKE-HOME MESSAGE
In this retrospective study, a 6-year incidence rate (IR) of eczema in patients on statins was 6.77% compared with 1.68% in those not on a statin, with a risk ratio (RR) of 4.04 (P < .001). When stratified by age, the oldest age group (>60 years) demonstrated the greatest RR of 6.21 (P < .001) versus the youngest age group (20–51 years) with the lowest RR of 0.72 (P = .5036). Patients taking atorvastatin, which is a higher-intensity statin, trended toward a slightly higher incidence of eczema than those taking simvastatin (IR, 9.09% vs 7.78%; P = .0749), suggesting a possible dose-dependent relationship.
- This study demonstrates an association between statin use and incidence of eczema, especially in older adults. This effect is likely due to the reduced cholesterol in the skin due to statins. An enhanced understanding of this relationship may help develop strategies for preventing drug-induced eczema.

Abstract
Statins are widely prescribed due to their efficacy in primary and secondary prevention of myocardial infarction via alterations in cholesterol metabolism.1Numerous statin-induced dermatologic complications have been reported but with less attention to eczema/atopic dermatitis.2,3 We sought to determine the relationship between statin use and incidence of eczema.
