Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology

TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

Abstract

Oral minoxidil (OM) has been used with significant improvement in androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in patients of either gender.1-4 In men with AGA, OM has been used alone, and in combination with other therapies and in doses varying from 0.25 mg/day to 2.5-5 mg/day.2,3 Some of the reported adverse effects of such lower doses of OM include lower limb edema, generalized hypertrichosis, hair shedding, urticaria, and other allergic reactions.1-4 In this case series, we share our experience of using 1.25 mg/day of OM monotherapy in 32 patients with male AGA.
